The Pitch:

When I go shopping I want to know the environmental impact of products and the companies that make them, while in the store. If you want this too, then you are a potential customer.
We will develop an online database with an environmental rating for everyday products. We will sell you the barcode scanners for your cell phone and charge an annual service fee for access to the online database. Subscribers can access the database, while shopping, by using our special application on their 3G-enabled cell phone.
“Good Entrepreneur”, help us to raise awareness and secure contact with a retailer.

Nitin Tawari says: Hey , Great Idea, quite interesting.

Peka Heitela says: Hello! I have seen another eco-footprint labelling entry on the good entreprenuer. A belgian gentleman, if I remember correctly.

Paul Jacobson says: Hey there, Peka
Thanks for the interest.

The ideas are different:
I want to sell you a barcode scanner and internet-based service.
The other gentleman wants to put stickers on jam bottles.

Hector Saragossa says: Useful.
Interesting.
Ingenious.
Innovative.
I like it!!!

Marianella Chabaneau says: I believe it is an interesting idea, which would also motivate companies to produce greener products, as transparency of information regarding production processes increases.

Mwana weVhu says: this is really clever...since cellphones are ubiquitous and we go everywhere with them, this will easily empower me as a consumer to know the environmental impact of any product i intend to buy

Erland Ritter says: Paul, good idea. While other, cumbersome alternatives go for stickers, legally defined criteria or depend on the self-commitment of the industry, you are offering an independent and flexible third party service, integrated in today's technology. Nice. Why don't you use the mobile camera and appropriate software to identify bar code (example Lufthansa check-in)? All the best!

Paul Jacobson says: Thanks Erland. Good suggestion about the camera, which we did consider already, but were keeping quiet about it :)
The service needs to work seamlessly, so we'll develop the option which supports the best user experience. For the purpose of this pitch we felt the barcode scanner was the more intuitive image to get across to people.
Cheers!
