Q&A with Richard Branson
Britain's best known entrepreneur started his first business venture aged just 16. The Virgin empire now includes media, telecomms, airlines - even space travel. In 2007, Branson launched the Virgin Earth Challenge to reward technologies which present a viable solution to climate change.
An entrepreneur is…. generally something you will fall into by accident and if you’re lucky the time and the place are right! It’s also about valuing and trusting the people you work with – as the very nature of entrepreneurialism means taking calculated risks, being innovative and exploiting gaps you see in a market that others are often too cautious to exploit – hence why finding good people to work alongside is one of the most important things an entrepreneur needs to understand!
The best advice I ever got was…. My mother always taught me never to look back in regret but to move on to the next thing. The amount of time people waste dwelling on failures rather than putting that energy into another project, always amazes me. I have fun running ALL the Virgin businesses - so a setback is never a bad experience, just a learning curve.
Another piece of good advice was from my mentor Freddie Laker. The first time I met him I was thinking about setting up my own airline. He gave me this advice: 'You'll never have the advertising power to outsell British Airways. You are going to have to get out there and use yourself. Make a fool of yourself. Otherwise you won't survive'.” I’ve been making a fool of myself ever since!
And the worst… I’d never embarrass the person by ever revealing that! Look advice comes in many forms as we know – never ask just one person – ask many. Opinions always vary but by asking several people what they think you get all angles and can weigh them all up – if you do it this way – you are never considering just one person’s opinion - so no one piece of advice is ever truly bad.
The most fun I’ve had as an entrepreneur was… Have you seen my kite surfing photographs?! But seriously I think being an entrepreneur you have fun when you see your ideas and businesses grow and become successful. I've had great fun turning quite a lot of different industries on their head and making sure those industries will never be the same again, to the benefit of the consumer, because Virgin went in and shook them up! I never know what to expect when we launch a new business in a new market or new territory - when you're trying something new – you never know what can happen. This is all experimental – that’s why it’s so much fun!
I wish I’d never… tasted chocolate! It’s my weakness! As I said before I never say never! The end.
In another life I’d have been… Richard Branson, of course! Sometimes I do wake up in the mornings and feel like I've just had the most incredible dream. I pinch myself every day as I sometimes can’t quite believe that my life is so full of interesting people, places, ten of thousands of wonderful staff who enjoy working for Virgin and of course my amazing family and friends. I’d be mad to want to be anyone else…
I said it would never work, but… I never say NEVER – I’m known as Dr Yes by my staff remember!!!! Although I could kick myself that we weren’t the company who invented the iPod!
