The Pitch:
The prevalent business model of maximising profit cannot ever truly be socially and environmentally responsible because this cannot easily be reconciled with the moral imperative of ‘doing the right thing’. There is always a trade off and someone or something always pays the price.
spaice has a model that seeks to address this by creating a retail channel that uses the same business tools that have to date concentrated so much wealth in so few hands to create a new order where business exists to serve society, not a few individuals.
The retail operation will initially be online, selling some of those products which most harm the environment – electronic goods, particularly computers, accessories and consumables.
The site will specifically encourage the shopper to question whether they truly need the item or if there is a better, less harmful alternative, perhaps all that is needed is maintenance rather than replacement.
80% of profits will be channelled to non profit organisations that have proved themselves to be effective at tackling the causes, not the symptoms, of the problems we face today.
