About: I am environmental entrepreneur and social enterprise ambassador. In 2007 I launched E&KO, which turns industrial waste into a diverse range of innovative products and returns 50% of profits to charity. E&KO has reclaimed over 40 tonnes of waste in its first 18 months of operations. In 2008 E&KO won the HSBC Start-Up Stars Green Award.

Thank you all so much for y...

The Pitch:

E&KO does three things; reclaims commercial and industrial wastes, up-cycles them into unique consumer products, and donates 50% of our profits to charities associated with the wastes. In our first 20 months we reclaimed 50+ tonnes of waste. To illustrate; we make a reusable shopper for Sainsbury’s. These are made in the UK from waste jute coffee sacks which we collect from UK coffee roasters. We have sold 40,000 since December 2008 and donate £0.10 from each sale to programs supporting the coffee growers and pickers that originally packed and sent the sacks to the UK.

Comments:

Robert Henrit says: Great idea, more power to your elbows!

Matt Cole says: Taking such a durable/functional material, saving it from landfill and making such great products - Truly inspirational! A win for the environment, the fire brigade's charity and the consumer who gets a well-designed and well-made product! Off to their website now to buy!

Serena Cole says: Love it! This is just so inspirational and all of the products are beautifully designed. Can't wait to get a bag!

Emma Morgan says: It's already been said below - but not only are your ideas truly inspirational, you actually make them happen for the good of so many! Well done, you are incredible people.

Eric Wesling says: Eric A. Wesling says: Significant environmental impact and to donate a share of the profits back to the suppliers is truly amazing. Outstanding ambassadors for the environmental movement.

Birgit Cole says: What 'The Elvis & Kresse Organisation' has come up with is truly impressive and totally inspirational.
Both, my husband and I were given red fire hose belts for Christmas and we love wearing them.
I only just discovered their website and am totally impressed with the range of products they have come up with and I can't wait to get my hands on one of their bags.

bergin omalley says: Terrific company and what funky bags. With so much waste in the world, it's great knowing that you are using your creativity to turn that waste into something beautiful. Looks good and feels good knowing that you're helping the environment and social causes--well done!

Ann Henrit says: Wonderful to see young people trying to make the planet a better place.
Hope the leaders of the world are listening.

Geoff Everett says: This is an example of how we should be thinking of unusual strategies; not just the obvious. This is excellent and will prompt others perhaps to consider the alternative and hitherto overlooked ways of saving this planet of ours. Apart from this - a super idea in its own right.

Olga Ruocco Daley says: I'm totally blown away by your ideas! To even come up with the idea of recycling fire brigade hoses is revolutionary. To donate 50% of the profits to the Fire Brigade charity as well is a wonderful act of generosity. This is the way that organisations should go.

The bags are funky. The website is great. The ideas mind-blowing.

Keep on inventing and re-using! This is truely inspirational. The words *well done* pale in the signficance of what you are doing.

Pete Rabjohns says: Great Idea, excellent products, and re-using, un-reprocessed packaging, this is the way it should be done. - also like the fact that you "recycle" a major percentage of the profits back to the materials donor as well.

If only we had people with your mindset running our major industries, banks and government, I for one would feel a bit more optimistic about our global future....

Keep it happenin'

Stix Corvette (Pete Rabjohns)

Brenda Lambie says: Real commitment to the environment, well done - I shall be looking out for your products, they sound amazing

Tony Anderson says: Anyone able to make use of any material to create a useful 2nd life and thereby avoid the problems associated with the disposing of unwanted non-biodegradable waste, is worthy of everyone's support. Also, to then return 50% of their profit to associated charities, is an example that puts most enterprises to shame.

Mark McKendrick says: Fantastic idea. Great regeneration. E&KO represesnt a real commitment to second life materiel usage. I would like to see products like this one day replace day-to-day items as a matter of course.

I love that they return 50% of their profit, too.

This is massive thinking.

Very best of luck.

Arti Fischel says: Brilliant - just brilliant!

John Lambie says: we live in the most wasteful society the world has ever known. Artifacts are under-used and then jetisoned without a thought!
To give products a second useful life as E&KO are doing strikes a blow for common sense.
The Elvis & Kresse Organisation are showing society how professional it is to re-use / re-invent otherwise wasted artifacts.

Full marks for the charitable re-use of profits too.

WHAT STARS THEY ARE!

Uno Fischel says: When my husband showed me this I could not believe that at last stylish, well designed, durable accessories that are made from recycled materials are available (that don't make one look like a reject from the '70's!) Thanks

gary ovey says: Great idea, did not really know that there was so much waste hose around. More power to you for this effort. best of luck with this venture.

Jim Westwood says: What a great idea, who would believe that you would create such a cool fashion item from a waste product, awesome! What's next!

Norman Davison says: Absolutely fantastic, Well done! some one who is not just pontificating but actually putting their ideas into practice.

I love the idea of using waste materials when ever possible.

You have inspired me to go back and persevere with a scrap feed stock I rejected about 6 months ago . recycled glass as an agregate for one of my eco coatings. thank you! thank you ! keep up the excellent work.

Alan Clare says: Excellent Idea

Alfred Wimmer says: With all respect, where are the facts? The hose will not thrown away by the fire department, it will be thrown away by the average consumer and end up where the hose would end up, at the land fill. The use of second hand material is also not new. Where is the environmental aspect?

Mark Hardy says: An excellent idea - keep them coming

Angela Smith says: This is a great idea and very inspiring. Something students at school would like to here about. Good to see young people taking the initiative and following through their ideas. Well done.

john thwaites says: A simple idea that someone has now put into practice for the benefit of all of us and future generations. Well done

Eric Henrit says: Hi
Great idea the the finished product is qiute sensational

gaby goeschl says: By all enthusiasm of the readers, what is this idea´s environment or climate revolution? Do you mean, the hoses get not thrown away as hoses, and not by the fire department. They get thrown away by the people as a different design. I do not want to minimize the idea but this is like the chemical industry, packing bad chemicals in a cube and flash it with good smell through the toilette into our oceans. To dump the bad substances is legal not allowed, to flash them in small quantities can be done, packed with a good smell, everyone is excited. Is this the idea? Where is the bag ending up?

andrew jehwo says: Well done, I wish you all the best.

Andrew

Mike Berry says: What a brilliant idea! Who'd have thought ..... FIRE HOSES??!!
With people like this to look after the planet there really is hope for a better future. Well done!

Greg Los says: A very very good recycling. I'll need two for my girlfriend. One to use and one to look for.

Max vl says: So, how do you recycle the bags? I see you postpone a problem, but I do not see a solution. How many bags will you be able to sell - in other words, a real impact on the postponing you will only have if you sell millions of these bags. Not convincing.

Lucas Simons says: I have a question. I like the fact that waste is reused. We should do more of that. But what is the environmental impact of your idea considering that the bags will end up as waste some day as well. Unless that waste is resued again and again it is postponing the moment of pollution. Correct?
thanks

Soren Kristensen says: Funny product but how does it help with our consumption culture? How is this an idea to change the world? How will bags be recycled after use?

Ron Downey says: Fantastic idea, seen some interesting things made out of recycled tyres but not fire engine water hoses. Look forward to seeing more. Best Wishes

william thomas says: I recently bought a fire hose wash bag and a belt from their web site:
www.fire-hose.co.uk

I love them! I haven't worn any of my other belts since.

The material is so durable, combined with the classic designs I expect them both to last a life time.......they won't ever be going to landfill.

Just waiting for the rest of the luggage to be designed.

Brilliant work.

Laura Bird says: Fantastic products that are both stylish and help waste management.

I love my red belt, seems like Cameron Diaz does too...!

José Gormaz says: Kresse, is anyone going to answer the 4 or 5 questions asked by various people on this site?

Jon Wesling says: Can't wait to see this product expanded into the North American market!

Well done Elvis & Kresse Organisation!

Kresse Wesling says: Thank you all so much for your positive feedback. Thank you also to Gaby and Alfred for giving us the opportunity to talk more about our raw materials. The raw material we collect is going to landfill - it is a cost to the Fire Brigades and our other partners - and it creates no social value. Our reusable shopper, which is made from 100% compostable, reclaimed jute coffee sacks, is an incredibly well made bag, built to last. So far we have saved over 40 tonnes of jute from going to landfill, made significant donations to coffee growers and are selling a reusable shopper that helps consumers avoid using single use plastic bags. If our bag ever does break down it makes ideal food for your home compost. Our fire hose range is different. Hose is not recyclable. By giving it a second life we are able to raise funds for the Fire Fighters Charity and create products of amazing strength and quality. All of our fire hose products are hard wearing - being hoses they are amazingly durable. These products are designed to last, to be passed on. And if people wish to send them back to us when or if they no longer want them we are more than happy to give the material a third life. Our main aim is to treat waste like gold. If all waste was treated this way, we wouldn't have waste!

Elaine Dutton says: Kresse,

You have a great track record for creating products that are good through and through - if only all designers were as waste aware as you are. Keep up the great work and good luck.

Dan Frederiksen says: Kresse, if you care about the planet you may have a sense of justice, so how do you feel about judges that are so stupid that they just look among the ideas that got the best votes and ignore those where petty competitors voted them down?
how do you feel about being selected among the 10 in that maner?
do you think that using used firehose for handbags will help significantly stop global warming?
for instance compared to a car that uses 20 times less energy than typical small cars. like my idea http://www.goodentrepreneur.com/The-Competition/Entries-Pool/Ultra-efficient-mobility-easy-quick-freedom-from-fossil-fuels
is your sense of justice great enough to fight the judges that praise you. to say no to the chance of a lot of money because you know you shouldn't win?
