The Pitch:

Ideas change the world.
The power of a new idea is the engine that transforms the way we live and think.

Cutting green house emissions using renewal energy, in itself, is a validated idea. The next step now is to facilitate proliferation of green installations.

This is exactly the objective of my business idea.

We are already using renewal energy since a long time. There exists a gap in selecting the most suitable renewal installation for individuals, small and large organizations.

My idea is to use a ‘Smart Power Metering System’ and a complete supply chain around it to source best renewal installations and support system for customers.

Using SPMS, the best option among several renewal installations can be recommended based on actual consumption behaviour of the customers. Not only this, SPMS will be customized to record every power transaction – power generated and power consumed. It will also track power consumer by a specific appliance or a set of specific appliances. This data will help reduce such consumption by taking counter measures.

This data will eventually help at the community level by providing consumption pattern of a complete locality based on the changes in the private power generation pattern. It will be realtime and it will help the local power provider to adjust its generation according to this pattern. To achieve this feet a lot of consensus though will be needed among all such players controlling a database which represents a community well.

This idea will impact the complete ecosystem of renewal energy efforts and will channel all forces towards the common goal.

Yes definately. The first step is data collection and as there are not many research publication on this aspect both in scientific community as well as in media, it does not undermine the potential. It is a validated concept. Not only this claim by me you can theoritical imagine that once you have a graph with pattern you start predicting the behavior. This behavior understanding is all the game pitched in this idea. Ones the SPMS (smart power management system) is supported by 'smart power metering system' and supply chain around it the whole concept flourish into a system to do better continually.

Rishi Diwan says: Dear Markus, The plan is to sell complete solution which includes green power generation devices (like your example PV array and this will be part of sourcing activity of my business- specific to customer location), installation service and maintenance service. This sourcing, installation and maintenance will be supported by SPMS. I hope this answer your question.

I think you are misinterpreting the basic idea.
Here is the example which will answer your query:
Say for example you have in your house two types of power devices, one with low power consumption like tube lights, bulbs, ceiling fans, etc, while the other with high power consumption like refrigerator, oven, air conditioning etc.
Now when you have a daily consumption chart in front of you from SPMS say from the collective power devices with low power consuming parts, this chart will give you many useful information to take counter measures to reduce your power consumption. Here are two types of counter measures:
First-When you see that your collective low power line is consuming power too high at a particular time of the day repetively then you can analyse the factor involved in it and take counter measures like switching off devices which are not necessary by changing your behavior towards consuming power. So this will make a vehavioral impact.
Second: The other option is that you change all your bulbs and tube lights to CFL tube lights. This will definately cut your power bill.

While the biggest help from SPMS device will be that it will record the power consumed by every predefined set of device and also the total power consumption of the whole house or busuness. Now this data will be extremely useful to select the green power generator device to suite the time of power needed and quantity and possibly selling some the extra power produced.

I hope this description help you understand my idea.

You have said it correctly that all pitched products and services ideas would be cool to do. I think your the most important part is managing energy needs using realtime data so out of the thee option you have one partly guessed right and right guess would have been Intelligent data collection to come up with solutions. The title tries to pitch the theme 'SPMS'.

Rishi Diwan says: The complete concept and effort will definitely take time and effort. You can not say it futuristic though because the technology needed to achieve this goal is already there. Its a matter of application of existing technologies. Regarding data handling- online collection is pitched and this might be difficult at some places but there exists alternatives. Let me give an example: GPRS enable modems can be used where there is no existing connectivity to web. This is cost right. But then this is about what is available and optimizing it. The second part of data handling will be analysis- i hope you will agree that we can analyse this just as another real-time moving chart. You will appreciate it if you have ever got chance to work on the process control of continuously running production processes. In the end, i am sure there is a lot to learn about the behavior of such an optimization. There will be aspects no other than hands-on experience will bring it. I hope this explanation helps.

I don't know how the world leadership at the end of this year in Copenhagen will react to the necessity surrounds our world. But power of entrepreneurs can definitely lead the effort.

Rishi Diwan says: Because every solar company would want to sell more and more of their product they will be happy to sell their product through us. This holds good for installations and support (maintenance) services. The dont need to maintain extra staff and high overheads of starting operations where there exists possibility that you have low cost supplier to do this job. We are beginning to sell products in Africa, peopel find them astonishingly valuable and desirable. Solar lamps that replace the need for kerosene lighting have such obvious advantages to the consumer as they are less expensive, less dangerous and less CO2 emmitting. It is not hard to sell them - it is hard to make them available for sale.

I am happy to see a good initiative coming from you !

I have been working with energy companies and got chance to work with some in renewable too, so this concept seems specially appealing to me.

I think this Idea has untapped potential as we all know are most of the time lazy to make efficient use of power and people get sensitive of saving energy but this sensitivity varies with various factors including involvement in a forum like this.

I see a practical use of this concept and does not seems to require rocket science. Integration of renewable energy has been issue with its cost benefit analysis even further difficult to get.

This idea can help to address to issues
• How to choose and integrated renewable energy
• Participating in saving energy without high involvement.

Hence SPMS attack the problem from sides, adding new renewable source and reducing wastage.

I am thinking on the data collection part , it might have some issues, as you yourself said not many research publication are there.one strong point of SPMS concept is that is claims to predict effectively the consumption pattern in long run.

There factors can be:
• Single person or family
• Number of Energy sources in use ( Electricity , Gas or both )
• Seasons ( temperature based factors )
• Sunlight ( moods or event depends on it )
• Vacations or Guests or illness.
• Reading books in night
• Parties or construction activates
• Emotional changes ( heart break )
etc

This are the first thoughts, you must be having more detail with you which is not visible in the small video and comments.

First, let me congratulate you for promoting such a noble cause of human upliftment, specially to those who need it most, along with your wonderful business idea.

I think our association can work wonders to many lives out there.

In our business plan we are planning to start out in three countries- Germany, Austria and India. I think your products will be a catch in the rural India where there are 400 million people without access to electricity.

In real practical terms, it will take significant time to establish distribution centers according to our proposed business plan. Even in such a case i see a real value in promoting your products in India. I am quite sure that in the second phase of starting out in India our business will also have distribution infrastructure in poor regions.

You don't have to worry about cost added from our distribution network. We will support your effort in every possible way.

I am though worried about several other setbacks. The first and foremost of them is cost of the products. For example a lamp with solar panel costing $30 without shipping cost is not a low cost solution when we are talking about poorest of the poor.

Could you share your experience here- What kind of income group (to put it here for example : income group with 1$ a day per person or less) can afford a lamp product from your company. Do you already have any microfinancing options in mind.

If i get your current practice right -it is part of philanthropic activities by some people or organizations willing to pay this price and gift these products to the poor families in underdeveloped nations. I am willing to work with your company in this case too.

Thanks for your detailed and thoughtful feedback.

The concern over data collection mentioned by you are very interesting specially i liked the one on heartbreak consequences on power consumption pattern.

Let me tell you that each of such case mentioned by you is a special case. Lets consider you are in the all mentioned situations one by one ;-). In each case you would clearly know the change in pattern when you will study the overall (or average or in general) consumption pattern when you will discuss this data for analysis with one of our experts. In this case you would immediately say -'OK lets not take this part of the data in concluding the general consumption pattern'. Reason being, each such event is very special and you will definitely can reason such unusual influences. Therefore you would like to exclude every such case to the maximum extent.

As now you are really thinking about it in detail, let me tell you more on this. This data collection at a particular time is just one input you would consider for deciding optimized power consumption needs for a near future. Example: You had bought a flat last year and now your girl friend is looking forward to moving in soon. In this case you would like to include such considerations too, specially when you want to invest or install before she starts living in your apartment.

I hope this explains my point against your concerns.

Rishi Diwan says: Madhav, I missed to answer one point regarding some more influences like you mentioned-more power sources, temperature changes due to weather, moods. All such influence, except mood, are measurable and it all depends on how intelligent SPMS you want to install. I am sure customer would not like to have micro data of very erratic and unpredictable influences. Better solution is to eliminate it to the maximum extent possible. As finally it boils down to affordability. So SPMS is customized solution depending on the customer needs.

There are element which i can not discuss in this forum which make SPMS really intelligently affordable. That's part of the novelty of this idea.
