Olive trees Ethiopia

The Pitch:

By creating Olive Tree plantation in the dry Northern Highlands of Ethiopia, the complete environment will change in the future. The land is at the moment highly degraded by erosion and drought. The Olive tree is the only tree which could survive in this area and give the farmers an income. The olive tree can become over 100 years old, so once planted it will survive many generations. By showing the farmers the value of the fruit, will prevent the cutting again. The pruning of the trees will generate for the farmers wood and fruit. And covering the area by many trees will give a climate change in humidity, which will make the land more fruitful again for the future.

The focus is on the Ethiopian market. The pasta cuisine is well known in Ethiopia, but they do not use Olive Oil, because the imported oil is to expensive. By producing in the country itself this will reduce the price. And why compete in the saturated European market of Mediterranean Olive Oil.

The company will start with producing olive oil from the existing Wild species. These Wild species and the olive oil production of the Wild species will be incorporated in the European species production and plantation. There is a big potential of creating plantation with European species and the agreement with the government cover an area of 2000ha. When this is all producing olives, the business is ready to export original Ethiopian olive oil.

The project is concerning agriculture with trees. Trees have the grow and produce fruit after a couple of years. After the first 12 months there will be no revenues. 60ha will be planted for the start, the break even of this investment is after 5 years. This is normal for this kind of agriculture projects. After 4 years there are positive revenues of 50,000 USD, which increase to 288,900 USD in its 6 year where the trees are mature. This is from the 60ha of plantation, but the area is big enough to expand over 1000ha in the future.

The most important guiding for success are the Ethiopian people. They have to believe in there own strength in producing high quality products. My marketing are the Ethiopians in promoting there own Olive Oil. So it has to be the passion of all of us to create something beautiful. Above anything!

Dan Frederiksen says: it's a nice thought but do they want to be helped or will they **** it up?

Lammert Nauta says: Hello Dan,
The Ethiopians are very supportive and see the opportunity as well. When they can earn money they are in.

Dan Frederiksen says: is a bag of seed and an instruction book not enough for them to get going?
or what else do they need?

Lammert Nauta says: When it was that simple, there would be no need to support third World countries. Lack of knowledge is all what needs to get supported. Learn these peoples in these areas the things and the whole World will get great benefits. Simple example: When you have sun shine every day, a big salt plateau nearby and you grow tomatoes. But the transport prices are rising to high that it is impossible to get the tomatoes to the market. What are you going to do? For us simple: Make dry tomatoes! But these people do not know this; they need to get instructions in these kinds of market opportunities. For us simple, but in these countries a hard job, which needs to be done in my opinion!

Fikru Getachew says: I know more than any one else about my country's people. I am thankful for those of you who knows about these people and try to help. But I never allow those of you who want to mock these innocent people. Before doing that, you have to understand the status of the people. You say give them manual ,,, but what is manual first of all for an illiterate people. It is not different from blank paper. Do you know, Ethiopian farmers are hard workers? You might ask why is then ,,, ? My answer for you, they are not literate, politics and politicians which has external influence, nature. The westerns or what ever, if there is some thing to gain from a country, they interfere in the country's politics. If not, even if, a good report, for instance Ana Gomez's EU report 2005, they don't do much. Anyway, this is too much ,,,, the case as some mentioned is not because the people are not hard worker but didn't get the opportunity to make their hard working efficient.
The young generation, those who got the education, is working fine, and you will see the countries progress in near future.
Regarding the Olive tree, it is my ambition to have it in the country. I knew about the plant when I came to Europe. The country's farmers don't know much about it. Most probably, I will see all the possibilities of growing this tree. This is how I saw this article also. I asked myself why this tree is not growing in my country and google it. Then I came across this article. May be, I will be successful. I will do more survey, and see how to do it. If you have any suggestions, you can send me e-mail. As you mentioned, if you have the manual, it is me who need it.
One day you will witness that Ethiopia starts exporting Olive oil!
