ORGANIC-IZING SIBIU
Dear Franziska, my answers...
The Pitch:
My project is located in Romania, in the area called “Marginime”, close to Sibiu- European Cultural Capital 2007. The population of the area is mostly elderly people living on the edge of poverty. The young ones left and are still leaving the area seeking a better life mainly abroad. However this area is especially rich in orchards and wild berries. My plan is to establish a company to produce organic dry apples and dry wild berries, in the first phase. The main investment would be a fruits drying facility powered by renewable energies. I would put together a network of local farmers who would grow / collect the raw materials i.e apples and wild berries and actively participate in the production process. The company would buy the fruits which will be processed, packed and distributed in natural and organic food shops. When the first products are successfully established on the market, the range will be extended to dried plums, apricots, wild mushrooms and medicinal herbs. The word “Organic” in my title is directly linked to the environmental benefits of this project. All orchards will be certified organic thus stopping the direct chemical pollution. Picking wild berries and transforming them into a means of income leads to increased care for the natural surrounding. “-izing” suggests he idea of organizing. This community can become a model for similar projects, by showing people that organic production is a win win situation, both for humans and nature and that on a long term both sides are linked to each other growing together and suffering if one harms the other.
