The Pitch:
The LIFESAVER bottle allows anyone to provide safe sterile drinking water for themselves and the family. It will produce up to 6000 litres of sterile drinking water. Given mass production it would cost just $0.5c per day to operate. And for only $20 billion the whole world could have safe sterile drinking water. 3.5 billion people would cease suffering from diarrhoea every year and 2 million more children would live. A small price for such a massive return.
Water is weight! Delivering it even short distances is time consuming and expensive and is an unnecessarily damaging contributor to global warming. It requires long logistic chains to maintain supplies. This problem is acutely evident during disasters and military operations. A study by the US Department of Defence shows the cost of delivering bottled water to Afghanistan at $4.69 per gallon. Hurricane Mitch costs were even higher with figures from the Pentagon showing the air freight cost at $7.60 a gallon.
A Boeing C-17 Globemaster III transport plane has a maximum payload for 72,000 litres (19,020 gallons) of water. Enough water to last 800 people 30 days at a cost of $144,000. An estimated 125,000 LIFESAVER bottles fit in the same payload. In a household of 4 people that is enough LIFESAVER bottles to provide 500,000 people with safe drinking water for up to 16 months at a cost of only $18m. It would take 9,375 C-17 shipments do deliver the same quantity of water at a cost of $835 million .
Put another way over a 60 day period shipping bottled water would cost $6 per person per day while providing LIFESAVER bottles the cost would be just $0.60c per person per day. Over the 16 months the cost would drop to $0.07c per person per day.
LIFESAVER bottle will have a significant impact on humanitarian and disaster relief operations world-wide. It’s unique technology now means local sources of water may be safely drunk. Importantly LIFESAVER bottle will reduce the onset and spread of diseases and reduce the logistical supported required when responding to events and humanitarian relief missions.
LIFESAVER lowers the overall cost of response by up to 70% as in many cases no bottled water will be required. Less medicine, staff and transportation are needed. Environmentally no landfill sites have to be created to dispose of the millions of waste plastic bottles and the CO2 footprint left after shipping LIFESAVER vs. bottled water is negligible.
LIFESAVER bottle will save lives. In future, deploying LIFESAVER bottles to emergency situations such as the recent flooding in the Bangladesh and the hurricanes in the USA will result in more lives being saved. There will less cost, less environmental impact and faster responses than were ever possible before.
