The Pitch:
Our project is called ‘Berlin’s got super collectors’ (Berlin sucht den Supersammler). It has been running for approximately six years and involves children from around 400 primary schools and nurseries in Berlin collecting recovered paper, in particular old newspapers and magazines, and bringing them with the help of their parents, aunts, uncles and other promoters into school. The schools have been provided with containers to fill, which are emptied regularly. For each tonne of paper collected, the schools receive €23. In addition, there is a bonus of €7000 each year, which is split between the three schools in which the most paper has been collected per head. So far, almost 17000 tonnes of clean, high value waste paper have been collected.
Our project implicates the following key benefits:
1) Environment
By reprocessing the collected paper into new paper products
- Saving trees
- No incineration of recovered paper
- Reduction of emissions and energy use
- Improvement of the CO2 balance
2) Schools and nurseries
- Raising of ecological awareness amongst the pupils
- Financial support and thus education to take the law into one’s hand
- Raising of team spirit
3) Paper industry
- Very clean raw material
- Secured urban source
- No “co-mingled” collection
4) Initiatory company
- Wide suppliers base
- Marketing effect
- Profit
- High suppliers rating in paper industry due to very clean supply
