No new oil is available ! that is the reality of the situation. Dont be fooled by the white noise which is currently block the real meassage . Oil has run out .
Have you ever wondered why children say things 3 times . It is because the signal dosn't sink in the first time .

So for thoes people who cannot grasp simple maths , Oil has run out ! Oil has run out Oil has run out !

Don't be fooled by the fact that oil inventories in the US have risen by 1.7million barells, or that diesel sales are down 7.5% on last year.( This is the recession effect less trucks on the road less trips.
Don't be fooled by the day fluctuations of the Cushing WTI crude or the Brent crude prices this has as much relevance as the price of tomatoes in the supermarket.

Factor in this point NO MAJOR OIL FIELD DISCOVERED IN LAST 15 YEARS.

All major oil fields in the world have peaked . ( current production is about 83 milion barrels per day . Absolute production is 86 million barrels per day, so we have some small capacitance - but not enough for the next economic upswing , or for that matter for a population going exponential.)

What does peak oil actual mean ? - It means in volume terms half of all the worlds oil is gone !

But that is too simple a perspective !

When you extract oil from the ground , first comes the easy flowing liquids through the fine rock strata and cracks , first flows the C1s, the C2's , the C3'3, the C4's
.....etc etc etc. LEFT BEHIND IN THE GROUND IS THE HEAVY STUFF . Ashphatines , heavy oils etc. NOT nice for flowing ( require special tertiary extraction techniques ( Read Mucho dinero, No bueno !) reuire steam injection, gas injection or dissolving by Dilluent then separation and recovery.)

The Oil companies know this very well, they simply wait for joe public to wake up to this fact !

There is oil in the Falklands, ( that is what the war was about , In the end all wars are about Money! ) However deep water economics preclude drilling if oil is not above $90 -130 us/per barrel . ( it simply isnt worth the effort , you would loose money.)

What is going on at the moment is the drill of more wells but on the periffery of exist oil fields, this is self defeating it simply means that the existing field is being exhausted at a faster rate.

So what are the options : 1) Reduce the wastage of existing energy ( you already know how this is done . super insulation- protection of core building temp
Protection of core building temps = reduction of heating cooling cycles - reduction of Kilowatts power.

2) reduce drastically the dependance on hydrocarbons

3) Introduce the Chineese solution 1 CHILD PER FAMILY . DRACONIAN PENALTIES FOR BREAKING THE RULE
POSSIBLE 100% SOCIAL OSTRICISATION BY SOCIETY

4) Accept coal, with cleaned up stack emmissions as a suitable substitute for oil .

5) Massive introduction of carbon neutral Homes - and retrofitting of older homes.

So for thoes of you who still believe that they can choose a life style that suits them personally, or they can borrow their way to one,
by re-mortgaging their house every 6 months .

Wake up !

Not necessarily!
Abiogenic Origin of Petroleum.

So there is still room for surprises.

It wouldn't hurt to invest in new energy efficient home building programmes, an oppertunity to have another go at city planning and do it better this time also as the UK is keen on building some Eco-Towns;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eco-towns_(UK)

I'm quite keen on an earth sheltered design, example of here in Cumbria UK;

http://www.visitcumbria.com/pen/undergroundhouse.htm

Though I'm more for a dome design for various reasons (Earthquake resistance, cost are a couple.), some good examples here;

http://www.monolithic.com

I'm also looking into having the concrete as waterproof to avoid the need for extra layers of materials to keep it dry;

http://www.waterproofconcrete.co.uk

You could also look towards building sustainable local energy sources, solar appears one of the most suitable for the UK being the more planner and NIMBY friendly compared with the other choices, an example from the USA;

http://www.solarwarrior.com

Also easier to add more capacity too over time, connect that to either the National Grid or perhaps a flow battery for storage;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flow_battery

You could reduce the need for oil in transport with not just better city planning (eg. housing close to business premises.) but also more use of electric vehicles, one suggestion I've seen to reduce the need for an expensive public transport network of buses is;

http://www.taxibus.org.uk

Whether oil is running out or not, reducing our dependancy on it seems to me to make good economic sense.
