Patents work for GE, Rolls Royce, Shell, UOP . They do not work for the little guy just starting up a business !
Where did patents come from, they are the derivatives of Roman protection for skilled tradesmen. who had developed a new or unique method for their craft.

Applying for a patent in the UK, is actually quite cheap, It costs just over a £100 pounds. But and there is allways a but in life. This only gives you protection in the UK. When your patent application has been duely mulled over for 6 months it will be published , to see if there are hidden objections that have surfaced.

Now comes the problem . Many companies and countries Data mine, specifically for new engineering . So guess wherea good place is to start looking ?
Right the Patent publications list !

So all Ari Yamada, and Bill Smith have to do is to check the publications lists for patent applications
I like this one , yeah, lets do it ! If the guy dosn't like it he can sue us ! and we have deeper pockets. Is the attitude .

It now starts to get worse, there are aproximately 200 countries in the world . Lets say our intrepid inventor goes really Gung Ho ! and files patents in all 2000 countries.
Lets represent the 200 cuntries by a table with 200 glasses on it . To keep these glasses full will cost £38,000 per year. On top of that Australia has come up with a real douzey If you don't go into production within 12 months, Your patent reverts to public domain. Nice one AUS !

So what can the little guy do ?

Fortunately there is an alternative . You can NASCopy your design .
You dont have to publish your design for Tom, Dick or Ari. to know exactly how to do it !
It has about 90% the effectivenes of a patent.
It is held in escro til you may have a requirement to use it in court. It is recognised by most courts in the world including China .

This process combined with carefull screening of your licencee's , before to licence. Plus the non-disclosure of propritory information gives you a much bigger bang for your buck.

Ps you can still go down the copyright, patent route at your leisure when you may have more funds to play with.
